Hybrid Research Seminar at the Warsaw School of Economics: Machine Learning in Medicine and Academic Competition

Viktoriia Hurochkina, 21 February 2026

On 21 February 2026, a hybrid research seminar took place, organized by the Centre for Ukrainian Studies at the Warsaw School of Economics (Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie, SGH) together with the Foundation “Ukrainian Scientific Diaspora in Poland.” The event brought together participants in Warsaw and online and became a platform for professional discussion at the intersection of digital technologies, healthcare, and the strategic development of the academic environment.

The seminar program featured two presentations:

William Klement (Canada) with the presentation “Applied Machine Learning in Healthcare: Evaluation, ROC Analysis and Imbalanced Data.”The speaker offered a practical overview of the application of machine learning methods in medicine, with a focus on the proper evaluation of models (in particular ROC/AUC) and the challenges of working with imbalanced data.

Special attention was given to good practice approaches in algorithm development - from model building to verifying the reliability of results before implementation in real-world processes.

2

Viktoriia Yanovska (Ukraine) with the presentation “Academic Competition – Strategic Decisions and Internationalization.” The presentation focused on issues of academic competition, strategic choice, and internationalization, which are especially relevant for universities and research teams in today’s international environment.

The presentations were delivered in the speakers’ native languages, while the presentation materials were prepared in English. The seminar generated strong interest among the audience and confirmed the importance of developing interdisciplinary dialogue and international academic contacts.

The Foundation “Ukrainian Scientific Diaspora in Poland” warmly invites scholars to join scientific discussions and present their research achievements. We hope that this meeting will become a basis for identifying shared topics and developing further partnership initiatives.
