Sergii Kashubin is a Senior Research Engineer at Google DeepMind in Zurich, Switzerland, where his work focuses on protein function discovery and agentic science, in collaboration with the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI). His interest in the intersection of biology and artificial intelligence began 15 years ago during his computer science studies in Ukraine.
He began his career as a software engineer in Google Search Quality, working on natural language understanding, before moving into applied research in natural language compositionality and computer vision, including work on mapping buildings and roads in the developing world. Driven by a long-standing passion for biology, he has spent the past four years in the life sciences, specialising in AI for proteins, from molecular dynamics to high-level function prediction.
His research has been published in venues such as ICLR and Science Advances. He recently contributed to the release of 26,000 novel protein function annotations with interpretable evidence (ProtNLM via UniProt) and to Science Skills, an open-source suite of agentic tools for automating life science workflows.
Within the Mentorship for Research Hubs programme, he can support research teams working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the life sciences, including machine learning, bioinformatics, natural language processing and open-source scientific tools, and share his experience of research careers in industry.
