Professor Oleksandr (Sasha) Talavera

Professor Oleksandr (Sasha) Talavera is a Ukrainian-born economist and Professor of Financial Economics at the Department of Economics, Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham. His research spans empirical corporate finance, banking, international finance, online prices and big data analytics, and emerging market economies, with a strong and sustained focus on the Ukrainian economy.

He is the author of more than 80 peer-reviewed articles published in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, the Journal of Econometrics, the Journal of Finance, World Development and Public Choice. His work on Ukraine covers topics such as bank lending and liquidity, corporate governance, labor markets and, most recently, research productivity and central bank communication during wartime. He also actively supervises PhD students and welcomes opportunities to support Ukrainian research teams.

  • Empirical corporate finance and banking;
  • International finance and emerging market economies;
  • Online prices, digital markets and big data analytics;
  • Political economy and corporate governance;
  • Ukraine-focused research: wartime economics, banking sector resilience, labor markets, and research productivity during conflict.

Within the Mentorship for Research Hubs programme, he can support research teams working in economics and finance, including on publishing in leading international journals, working with large datasets and supervising early-career researchers.
