COST WEMov project supports the initiative "Ukrainian Science Diaspora"

Igor Lyman, 20 July 2023

The WEMov network, which includes representatives from 54 countries, has significant potential for cooperation with the Ukrainian Science Diaspora initiative. All members of the WEMov network are invited to spread the word about this initiative in their countries.

After the start of Russia's full-scale aggression on 24 February 2022, a new powerful wave of emigration from Ukraine began. The restriction on men under 60 years of age to cross the border due to the introduction of martial law has created a situation where women make up the vast majority of emigrants from Ukraine. Scientists are widely represented in this wave.

COST Action "Women on the Move" supported the initiative "Ukrainian Science Diaspora" through a virtual mobility grant "The Female Dimension of Ukrainian Scientific Emigration: Mapping and Interviewing". The initiative, launched by the Scholar support Support (Young Scientists Council at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), aims to establish links with Ukrainian scientists who have left Ukraine and develop tools to support them and programmes for their return to Ukraine.

The initiative is implemented on the basis of methodological tools of the International Organisation for Migration, which is part of the United Nations (IOM Diaspora Mapping Toolkit).
