Resilience and Reinvention

Viktoriya Kulyk, 30 серпня 2023

Czechia

After the outbreak of a full-scale war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, I was forced to move with my family to the Czech Republic.

I was invited by my colleague Dagmar Škodová-Parmová, who at that time was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of South Bohemia.

Dagmar Škodová-Parmová and I have had long-standing professional ties since 2015. In 2015-2016, under her guidance, I conducted research in economics at the University of South Bohemia with the support of the Visegrad Fund.

In the spring of 2022, I came to the Czech Republic and was allowed to work as a researcher at the Department of Accounting and Finance under the guidance of Milan. In addition to the support of the University of South Bohemia, I received a research grant for Ukrainian scientists from the Neuron Foundation.

Now I continue to work at the University of South Bohemia as a researcher. I conduct research related to the development of e-business in Ukraine and EU countries, in particular, in the areas of implementation of the current legislation governing business and accounting.

Alongside my studies at the university, I am learning Czech. Michaela Prochazkova, a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages, works with me on a volunteer basis. In 9 months, I learned Czech to the B1 level and continue to study.

In the Czech Republic, I live with my daughter Maria, she is 12. She studies at a Czech and Ukrainian school in parallel. She is also a professional swimmer. She is a member of the Kohinoor swimming team.

I am very grateful to my colleagues at South Bohemian University for their support. During this difficult time for me, I was able to be with my daughter in safety and continue working in my profession. The experience of working with Czech colleagues enriched me as a professional and as a person.

My plans for the future are related to working in higher education. I love teaching, science and accounting. I have been working in this field all my life and I have never doubted the right choice of my profession.

What will happen next?
After Ukraine wins, we will see.
