On March 22, a powerful event titled "Ukrainian Science Diaspora: Connecting Scholars for the Future" took place as the third day of the conference "One year of war in Ukraine, exploring the impact on the science sector and supporting initiatives." The conference was organized by the International Science Council (ISC) and the All European Academies (ALLEA).
The event's co-organizer was the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, with Yevheniia Polishchuk and Igor Lyman serving as moderators.
The opening remarks were delivered by Vivi Stavrou (Executive Secretary of the Committee for Freedom and Responsibility in Science (CFRS), Senior Scientific Officer at ISC), Luke Drury (Vice-President of ALLEA), Ihor Taranov (Director-General of the Directorate of Science and Innovation at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), Olga Budnyk (Advisor to the President on issues of the President's Fund for Support of Education, Science, and Sport), Yuri Gogotsi (Professor at Drexel University, USA, founder and director of the Institute of Nanomaterials), and Olesya Vashchuk (Chair of the Council of Young Scientists at the Ministry of Education and Science, Head of the Scientist Support)
After Peter McGrath's (The World Academy of Sciences) presentation on "Science Diplomacy: What it is, and how it can be used to develop diaspora strategies," Eugenia Polishchuk introduced the concept of the Ukrainian Science Diaspora initiative, followed by a discussion on how best to utilize a science diaspora network. Eugeniia Polishchuk and Svitlana Krasinska (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) presented "MIT support for Digital platform of Ukrainian Science Diaspora" with a discussion on ideas for improving the Digital platform of Ukrainian Science Diaspora.
A particularly intriguing aspect of the event was the presentations on the achievements of the Ukrainian science diaspora in Germany (Natalia Butych, Managing Director of the German-Ukrainian Academic Society), Luxembourg (Inna Ganshova and Marten Düring, University of Luxembourg), Krakow (Svitlana Chuhayevska, Jagiellonian University), and France (Olena Kovalchuk, University of Marseille).
The event brought together over 120 scientists from various countries. We express sincere gratitude to all participants for their active involvement and interest
