On March 27, 2026, the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Paris hosted an event titled “Ukrainian Studies and Broader University Cooperation,” dedicated to the development of Ukrainian studies in France and the expansion of inter-university cooperation between Ukrainian and French academic institutions.
The highlight of the event was the signing of a memorandum of cooperation involving Université Lumière Lyon 2, which is contributing to the development of Ukrainian studies and supporting new formats of academic partnership. Participants in the event included representatives from the universities of Bordeaux, Strasbourg, the Sorbonne, Lyon, and other French higher education institutions: University of Lorraine, University Bordeaux Montaigne, University of Strasbourg
Representatives of the organization “Ukrainian Scientific Diaspora in France” also took part in the event, joining professional discussions and taking the initiative to provide further practical support for cooperation. It is particularly important that the discussion focused not merely on symbolic presence, but on a willingness to assist in specific areas, which are increasingly opening up today: academic partnerships, communication between institutions, cultural projects, support for new educational initiatives, and expert guidance for inter-university contacts.During the meeting, the view was particularly clearly expressed that Ukrainian studies today are not just about academia in the classical sense. They are also about cultural presence, about explaining Ukrainian experience, history, and intellectual tradition to the European community.
Today, it is precisely the Ukrainian academic diaspora in France that is increasingly becoming a natural intermediary between the two academic communities—Ukrainian and French. Its role lies not only in presenting Ukrainian topics but also in building trust, fostering long-term professional contacts, and creating new opportunities for joint research, educational programs, and humanitarian initiatives. It is precisely this consistent presence in the academic sphere that shapes Ukraine’s long-term visibility in Europe.
