On June 24, 2025, an editorial article by Dr. Yevheniia Polishchuk, Professor and Co-Founder of the Ukrainian Science Diaspora initiative, was published in Geopolitics under Globalization under the title: “Displaced but not disconnected: the potential of scientific diaspora in the rebuilding of Ukraine.”
In her article, Yevheniia describes how Ukraine’s scientific community managed to restore connections following the mass forced migration of scholars caused by russia’s full-scale invasion. From the first conversations in Brussels in October 2022 to the creation of ukrdiaspora.nauka.gov.ua, the platform has grown into a global digital map and collaboration space for Ukrainian scientists.
The article highlights:
- the first gathering of Ukrainian researchers abroad in Kraków (March 2023);
- MIT’s role in the platform’s development and support through the MIT-Ukraine program;
- the expansion of academic diaspora networks in 16 countries;
- stories of solidarity from Ukrainian scientists who found new opportunities abroad;
- the mentorship program coordinated by Dr. Uliana Zbezhkhovska that connects scholars in Ukraine and abroad.
The author calls on the global academic community to view support for Ukrainian scientists not only as a gesture of solidarity but as an investment in rebuilding science in Ukraine and worldwide.
