AI-powered learning opens MIT courses to Ukrainian students

Uliana Zbezhkhovska, 02 May 2025

We’re delighted to share some exciting news from our global community!

Two years ago, the MIT-Ukraine Program supported the launch of the Ukrainian Leadership and Technology Academy (ULTA), a program for exceptional young Ukrainians. Special thanks to Andrii Zahorodnii, Dima Yanovsky, Svitlana Krasynska, and many dedicated MIT students who made it possible.

Last fall, ULTA alumna Sofiia Lipkevych reached out to MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) with a bold idea: to use the AI-based translation tool she developed to bring OCW’s courses to Ukrainian students in their native language. This marks the first-ever use of AI for video translation on the OCW platform.

And there’s more good news — Sofiia has been accepted to MIT and will join as a first-year student next year!

MIT News just published an article about this translation initiative:

AI-enabled translations initiative empowers Ukrainian learners

Congratulations to everyone involved in these inspiring efforts!
