We invite you to take part in the workshop “Ukrainian contributions to particle physics: history and prospects”, which will be held on 26–30 January 2026 in a hybrid format at CERN (https://indico.cern.ch/event/1603776/)
The Ukrainian scientific community and the Ukrainian science diaspora have made a significant contribution to the development of particle physics since the early 20th century. However, this contribution has often been attributed to the “Russian Empire,” the “Soviet Union,” or to the countries to which Ukrainian scientists were forced to emigrate in order to save their lives or continue their research.
The event is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Ukraine’s associate membership in CERN and aims to bring together Ukrainian and international scientists, historians of science, political scientists, and other experts to discuss:
- Ukraine’s contribution to the development of particle physics;
- issues of preserving scientific heritage and restoring historical justice;
- the role of international cooperation in advancing the field.
Abstract submission is open until 31 December 2025 on the CERN Indico website.
Organizers encourage Ukrainian institutions working in particle physics to submit materials about their achievements. Particular attention will be given to:
- the formation of Ukrainian scientific schools in the 20th–21st centuries;
- the impact of political regimes and transnational connections;
- the continuity of ideas and the role of the Ukrainian diaspora;
- the contributions of Ukrainian scientists abroad (such as George Gamow, Volodymyr Vatagin, Gregory Breit, Gersh Budker, Vladimir Veksler) and those who worked in Ukraine (Mykola Bogolyubov, Lev Landau, Oleksandr Akhiezer, Heorhii Volkov, Helmut Walter, among others).
The final program with selected oral presentations will be announced on 12 January 2026.
Languages of the event: Ukrainian and English.
Registration is open until 19 January 2026.
We invite everyone interested in particle physics and the history of science to join the discussions and contribute to representing Ukraine’s scientific achievements in the global context.
