Economist For Ukraine invites you to sign an open letter calling for the immediate expulsion of Russia from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). We believe that Russia’s continued membership in the IMF is an insult to the international community and undermines the principles of peace and justice, especially in light of its war against Ukraine.
The recent decision by the IMF to cancel its planned mission to Russia following global outrage is a step in the right direction. However, this is only the beginning. The international community must take a stronger stand against Russia’s actions, and expelling Russia from the IMF is a crucial step in this process.
Why should Russia be expelled from the IMF?
- Russia’s invasion of Ukraine violates international law, and its aggression has resulted in numerous war crimes and humanitarian crises.
- IMF missions to Russia risk legitimizing a government that supports war and disinformation while providing no reliable data to either the IMF or the global community.
- The appointment of a sanctioned individual as russia’s representative to the IMF only worsens the situation and demonstrates russia’s disregard for international norms.
Although the cancellation of the IMF mission to Russia is a positive step, it is not enough. To prevent any formal engagement with Russia until it fully complies with international law, including the withdrawal of its troops from Ukraine, we propose systemic measures such as prohibiting IMF staff from interacting with sanctioned individuals and amending IMF rules if necessary.
It is time to act decisively! We call on the IMF to take the lead on this issue and ensure that countries violating international standards no longer enjoy the privileges of IMF membership.
